A showing of 25 pop icon impasto painted portraits.
Mark Tippett has been a commercial artist, art director, master soapmaker, copy editor, published author, trainer, caricaturist and painter. His art career spans over 25 years. He has always drawn faces sometimes aligned to caricature – in which he calls a form of 'social commentary' - and painted portraits. He has entered the Archibald Prize four times, and the Bald Archy Prize, nine times, as a finalist. Subjects for the Archibald have included dual Olympic gold medallist sports shooter, Michael Diamond, Prof Gordian Fulde from Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital and champion marathon swimmer, Susie Maroney.
Mark specialises in commissioned fast and fresh expressionist portraiture. He has Degree in Fine Arts and is also a qualified trainer, teaching art classes to all ages. Clients include the Sydney Art School, Art Gallery of NSW and high schools and community groups.
His current expressionist work focuses on the essence of face, using gestural marks to capture the image in impastoed lines and contours, using a limited palette, fauvist-style complementary colours in shadows and lights and experimenting with built up oil glazes to express transparency of fame. His work, often experimentive in nature. He wants to create awareness to the viewer of complexities of personality and colourful deftness of character. Influences include Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, André Derain, Ben Quilty, Adam Cullen and Anh Do.
As seen on Channel 7Two's Get Arty children's program.
