Bio

Mark Tippett began life as a commercial artist, working in advertising layout and design before graphic design and art direction. He paints and draws portraits: his self-styled approach, irreverent, aligning to the art of caricature. He has entered the Archibald Prize three times, and a six-times finalist in its more laconic partner, the celebrated Bald Archy Prize. Subjects for the Archibald have included dual Olympic gold medallist sports shooter, Michael Diamond, Prof Gordian Fulde from Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital and champion marathon swimmer, Susie Maroney.

Mark works as a commissioning artist (as well as live work at occasional functions and events). He has studied Fine Arts and also teaches art classes to all ages. Clients include the Sydney Art School, Art Gallery of NSW and high schools and community groups.

His impressionist work focuses on the essence of face, using gestural mark making to capture the image in impastoed lines and contours with fauvist-style complementary colours and experimenting with built up oil glazes. He wants to create awareness to the viewer of complexities of personality and colourful deftness of character: seeking images of pop art icons or those people less widely known. Influences include Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, André Derain, Ben Quilty and Adam Cullen.

Update: selected work currently showing on Art Arena New York.
